David retired from IBM in 1996,
after 30 years in Field Engineering Division. He is a self-taught
faceter and has been faceting since 1961 and teaching privately
since 1990. A member of the "Alabama Mineral and Lapidary Society",
"Midwest Faceters Guild" and the "United States Faceters
Guild", he is an active competition faceter and has completed
G.I.A.'s colored stone grading course. He and his wife have been
participating in gem and mineral shows since 1988.
CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class includes a short discussion
on "things that you need to know to facet". The class
includes topics such as color, hardness, refractive index, reflection,
cleavage planes, sensitivity to heat and different types of rough.
Dropping with wax and transfer are also included. The first stone
Dave teaches will be a modified round brilliant of quartz. After
completion of the first stone, the student will be able to purchase
different material and facet additional stones.
After completion of the modified
round brilliant a choice of the "Portuguese" cut or an
oval cut will be offered to the student.
LAB FEE: A $45.00 lab fee includes
the cost of rough material to cut the first stone, Lab Guide, and
a small stone inspection kit.
